The doll is a minimalist work and uses the natural wood to its full potential. The Kokeshi is wearing a mino. This is a type of clothing worn by the farmers and rural people in the mountains to protect them from rain and snow. 
Shozan Shido was one of the most important kokeshi doll artists of the "golden age" (1960s-1970s). He won major awards at the All Japan Kokeshi Competition year after year in the 1960s.
